58 Locations. 6 States. A
Century-Old Department Store Chain Closes.
Hudson Capital Partners served as part of the court-appointed liquidation consortium for Gottschalks — a 105-year-old department store chain across California, Washington, Alaska, Oregon, Nevada, and Idaho.
The Engagement
Gottschalks, founded in Fresno, California in 1904, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January 2009 after failing to reach a going-concern acquisition deal with a Chinese government-owned conglomerate. The same four-firm consortium that managed the Circuit City and Mervyn's liquidations — SB Capital Group, Tiger Capital Group, Great American Group, and Hudson Capital Partners — was appointed to liquidate the company's inventory across all 58 department store locations and its distribution center. Going-out-of-business sales were approved to run through July 15, 2009.
This engagement was led by Eaton Hudson founder James Schaye through Hudson Capital Partners, the predecessor firm whose institutional track record is now represented under the Eaton Hudson banner.
Scope of Work
- Complete inventory liquidation across 58 store locations and distribution center
- Going-out-of-business sale management across California, Washington, Alaska, Oregon, Nevada, and Idaho
- Full department store merchandise disposition including apparel, accessories, cosmetics, and home goods
- Coordination with co-liquidators SB Capital, Tiger Capital, and Great American Group
The Eaton Hudson Advantage
The Gottschalks engagement was executed as part of an unprecedented run of major retail liquidations in 2008–2009, requiring the same Hudson Capital Partners team to manage multiple large-scale dispositions concurrently. The ability to execute at that pace and volume — across Circuit City, Mervyn's, Linens 'N Things, and Gottschalks in rapid succession — reflects the institutional capacity that now defines Eaton Hudson's platform.
