57 Years of Academic History —
A Massachusetts College Winds Down.
Eaton Hudson's Collegiate Asset Disposition division managed the complete campus asset sale for Newbury College in Brookline, Massachusetts, following the 57-year-old institution's closure.
The Engagement
Newbury College, a 57-year-old institution in Brookline, Massachusetts, announced its closure in December 2018 following years of financial pressure in an increasingly challenging higher education landscape. Eaton Hudson's Collegiate Asset Disposition division was engaged to manage the complete sale of the college's campus assets.
Jim Schaye reflected on the emotional dimension of the engagement: "Walking around Newbury College and seeing the kids there and knowing it was their last day, and they were leaving is always difficult. We're sensitive to that." The disposition covered the full range of campus FF&E — from academic and athletic equipment to administrative and technology assets.
Assets Liquidated
- Athletic equipment including lacrosse helmets and sports gear
- Audiovisual equipment and projectors
- Classroom furniture and lecterns
- Laboratory and science equipment
- IT and technology assets
- Administrative and office furniture
- General campus operational items
The Eaton Hudson Advantage
Newbury College illustrated a key principle of Eaton Hudson's collegiate division: the emotional context of a campus closure demands a disposition partner who leads with sensitivity, not just efficiency. The Eaton Hudson team's on-campus presence during the final days of the institution — and their ability to execute a thorough asset sale while respecting the experience of students and faculty — reflects the human dimension of our collegiate disposition practice.
